Addiction Recovery and opioid crisis suspense

The core theme of TANGLED DARKNESS explores how buried shame and unresolved trauma can destroy lives — even years into recovery. As a former addiction psychiatrist, I witnessed countless alcoholics and addicts whose past mistakes haunted them long after achieving sustained, long-term sobriety. This inspired Leslie’s character: a successful psychiatrist whose decade-old secret threatens everything she’s built.
The novel examines how secrecy erodes relationships from within. Leslie’s inability to confess her past to her pregnant wife Izzy demonstrates how addiction’s psychological patterns persist beyond substance use. Through my years treating healthcare professionals struggling with addiction, I learned that fear of losing one’s license often drives harmful concealment, creating exactly the vulnerabilities that destroy careers and families.
I wanted to illuminate how recovery isn’t a destination but an ongoing practice of radical honesty. Leslie’s journey shows that professional success doesn’t inoculate against old patterns when extreme stress resurfaces or really at any time. The opioid crisis adds urgency to this theme — showing how legitimate medical practices can become corrupted, affecting entire communities.
Most importantly, I believe redemption remains possible even after devastating choices. While Leslie faces severe consequences for her deceptions, the possibility of rebuilding through truth-telling offers hope. Having seen many people transform their lives through courage and accountability, I wanted to create a thriller that entertains while demonstrating that our darkest secrets lose their power when brought into light.
